Netmeds
E-Commerce Pharmacy Ecosystem
Built the technology platform powering Netmeds' online pharmacy ecosystem, handling 200,000+ daily orders with prescription verification workflows, cold-chain logistics integration, and regulatory compliance across Indian pharmaceutical regulations.

The Structural Challenge
Netmeds needed to build a comprehensive online pharmacy platform that complied with India's complex pharmaceutical regulations while delivering the consumer experience expected of modern e-commerce. The Drugs and Cosmetics Act mandates prescription verification for Schedule H and H1 drugs, cold-chain maintenance for temperature-sensitive medications, and batch-level traceability for every pharmaceutical product sold.
The product catalog encompassed 70,000+ SKUs across prescription drugs, OTC medications, health supplements, and medical devices — each with different regulatory requirements, storage conditions, and handling protocols. Inventory management had to track not just stock levels but batch numbers, manufacturing dates, expiry dates, and storage temperature compliance for every unit.
The prescription verification workflow was particularly challenging: uploaded prescription images needed to be validated against ordered medications, checked for prescriber credentials, and verified for dosage appropriateness — all while maintaining checkout speed that competitive e-commerce platforms had conditioned users to expect.
The Systems Architecture & Solution
We built an OCR-powered prescription processing pipeline using TensorFlow-based models trained on 500,000+ Indian prescription images. The system extracts medication names, dosages, prescriber details, and validity dates with 96% accuracy, routing ambiguous cases to pharmacist review queues. This reduced average prescription verification time from 15 minutes to under 2 minutes, with 68% of prescriptions cleared automatically.
The inventory management system tracks each pharmaceutical unit at the batch level, implementing FEFO (First Expiry, First Out) allocation logic that ensures medications closest to expiry are dispatched first. Temperature monitoring IoT sensors in warehouse zones and delivery vehicles feed real-time data to the platform, automatically flagging cold-chain breaches and preventing affected inventory from being allocated to orders.
The order orchestration engine implements a sophisticated fulfillment routing algorithm that considers warehouse proximity, inventory availability, delivery SLA requirements, and cold-chain constraints to select the optimal fulfillment center for each order. Split-order logic handles cases where a single order must ship from multiple warehouses, coordinating delivery timing for unified customer experience.
Architecture Decisions
ML-powered prescription OCR processing 96% of prescriptions automatically
Batch-level pharmaceutical inventory with FEFO allocation and expiry management
Cold-chain monitoring with IoT sensors and automated breach response
Multi-warehouse fulfillment routing with split-order coordination
The Measurable Enterprise Impact
The platform scaled from 40,000 to 200,000+ daily orders within 18 months of launch, with the automated prescription verification system enabling this growth without proportional increase in pharmacist staffing. The 68% auto-approval rate for prescriptions translated to significant operational cost savings while maintaining full regulatory compliance.
Delivery accuracy reached 99.7% — critical in pharmaceutical e-commerce where incorrect medication delivery carries health risks and regulatory penalties. The cold-chain monitoring system prevented an estimated 12,000 temperature-compromised deliveries in its first year of operation, protecting both patient safety and product efficacy.
